Ryan Reynolds made a surprise appearance as the beloved Marvel character Deadpool at the Creative Arts Emmys where he accepted an award for documentary series Welcome to Wrexham. The Emmy Award-winning series follows Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they join forces to purchase a fifth-tier football team in hopes of turning it into an underdog success story.
During the acceptance speech, McElhenney stated, “Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honour. There’s so many people to thank. I’ve been waiting for this moment for 16 years so I’ve got a lot to say. I’d like to start by thanking…” when he was interrupted by Deadpool, sporting his iconic mask along with a suit and tie.
Deadpool expressed his gratitude, saying, “First and foremost, Wrexham, we love you. Thank you for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story. Cymru am byth, b—hes! I’d also like to thank FX and Disney for their support and in exchange, Mr Lively promises to not f–k up my next movie. Lastly, The Oscars, you’re on notice motherf—kers. Maybe we can get a token VFX nod next year. The amount of work on Hugh and Ryan’s face alone is at least worth a nod.”
Welcome to Wrexham, available on Hulu and Disney+, earned multiple awards at the event, including Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program, Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, and Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program.
Reynolds will reprise his role as Deadpool in Deadpool 3, which is set to release in July 2024. Directed by Shawn Levy and featuring the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the film will maintain the franchise’s R-rated excitement while incorporating into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Little is known about the plot, but there have been rumors of a road trip across the Marvel multiverse, with potential for various cameos.
Levy hinted at some of the surprise appearances, saying, “What blew my mind is how easy some of those cameos have been. People love Deadpool. People love Ryan [Reynolds]. Thankfully people also seem to like my work. They know that Ryan and I are in a groove of creative brotherhood that is unique and seems to be working.”
Deadpool 3 is set for a US release on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
