Netflix is rapidly expanding its popular franchises, with numerous spinoff projects in development, including those based on The Witcher, Stranger Things, and now, Extraction. The spinoff series is described as a “TV show set in the world of the action-movie franchise Extraction,” according to a Bloomberg report. Given the upcoming movie sequels centered around Chris Hemsworth’s character Tyler Rake, it’s possible that this spinoff series will introduce new mercenary characters or follow existing characters from Extraction or Extraction 2.
With the news of the spinoff, Netflix’s Head of Film Scott Stuber provided an update on Extraction 3 in an interview with Collider. He revealed that they are currently working on the script while highlighting the addition of Idris Elba to the franchise as a move that has ‘evolved’ it moving forward.
Stuber said, “Getting Idris [Elba] into the franchise was an interesting way to kind of evolve it. So we’re waiting on the script and working hard, but aspiration would be great to get it back. I mean, what those guys have done has been really great in that franchise.”
The first Extraction film was released on Netflix in 2020, introducing Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary. Despite mixed reviews, the film’s action sequences and one-takes were praised, leading to Extraction becoming the most-watched original film in Netflix’s history. The sequel, Extraction 2, was released earlier this year and received a more positive response from critics, who praised Hargrave and Hemsworth’s commitment to crafting gripping action sequences.
With Extraction 3 in the works, director Sam Hargrave already has ideas in mind. He said, “if people enjoy the second one, there already is — and this is without spoiling anything — but there is a story in development for a third movie in the works.”
Extraction and Extraction 2 are currently available to stream on Netflix.
