The highly anticipated science fiction mystery movie Mickey 17, written, directed, and co-produced by Bong Joon-ho of Parasite fame and starring The Batman’s Robert Pattinson, has been delayed indefinitely. Warner Bros. Pictures removed the film from its release schedule due to post-strike production shifts, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Instead, the MonsterVerse sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit theaters on March 29, 2024, rather than its previous April 12, 2024 release date. It is hoped that a new release date for Mickey 17 will be announced soon.
The delay aligns with the fact that no trailer has been released for Mickey 17, but a sneak peek teaser featuring Pattinson and a preview of the film’s visuals has been released. Bong Joon-ho will be at the helm as the director, and fans are eagerly awaiting more information on the project.
Joon-ho has written, directed, and produced Mickey 17, which is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The film’s title has been changed to Mickey 17 to differentiate it from the original novel. The story follows Mickey7, an “Expendable” – a disposable employee who regenerates a new body with most of his memories intact anytime he is killed on a dangerous mission. When he goes missing and is presumed dead, he is replaced by Mickey8, leading to major complications as Mickey7 tries to avoid being killed for good.
It is expected that the adaptation will stay true to the source material, with Pattinson playing the role of an “expendable,” a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. As one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of the character’s memories intact.
Pattinson has teased that Mickey 17 will be unlike anything he has done before, describing the film as “crazy” and “a completely different style.” Last year, he said that the movie is “so much talking” and has a unique style of working under the direction of Bong Joon-ho.
Mickey 17 boasts a star-studded cast, including Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Mark Ruffalo (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law). Bong Joon-ho is producing the film in collaboration with Plan B Entertainment and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company.
Edward Ashton, who penned the original novel, has revealed that he was not aware of the movie’s production until a press release announced that the rights had been picked up. He has since spoken with Joon-ho and suggests that fans can expect some significant changes in the adaptation. Ashton expressed his confidence in the director’s ability to create a successful film, calling Bong Joon-ho a “genius” and stating that he is not concerned about the changes that may occur in the adaptation.
