Fans of the classic horror film The Lost Boys will soon be able to experience the story in a new way, as the 1987 movie is being transformed into a musical. Patrick Wilson, known for his roles in The Conjuring and Insidious, will serve as one of the producers, alongside James Carpinello and Marcus Chait.
Carpinello is best known for his roles in the 2004 film The Punisher, while Chait is known for playing J.D. Fitzgerald in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby. All three producers have a strong background in Broadway productions. Wilson previously starred in the musical adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera in 2004 alongside Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum.
The book for The Lost Boys musical will be written by a talented team including David Hornsby, an alum of the hit TV show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Broadway mainstay Chris Hoch, Tony award-winner Michael Arden, and the band The Rescues, comprised of Kyler England, AG, and Gabriel Mann.
Ethan Popp, a two-time Tony award-nominee, will serve as the music supervisor for the stage production. He will be responsible for determining how the film’s iconic 80’s soundtrack will be utilized by The Rescues in the musical and how much new music will be written for the band to perform.
The Lost Boys soundtrack featured a mix of memorable tunes and artists such as Jimmy Barnes and INXS, Lou Gramm, and Echo & the Bunnymen. The forthcoming musical will need to find a balance between incorporating these classic songs and introducing new music, much like the musical adaptation of the 2000 film American Psycho did.
This isn’t the first time The Lost Boys has been considered for a musical adaptation. G Tom Mac, also known as Gerard McMahon, had a planned 2022 musical that never came to fruition. As of now, there is no established production timeline or release date for The Lost Boys musical, and auditions and casting selections have yet to be announced.
