- Godzilla Minus One achieves the highest Rotten Tomatoes audience score in the franchise at 98%.
- While critics awarded Minus One a 97% Tomatometer rating, it trails Godzilla vs. Destoroyah’s perfect 100%.
- Minus One still needs to outperform Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla, which earned $525 million worldwide, in terms of box office success.
Godzilla continues its reign, as the latest film in the 69-year-old franchise, Godzilla Minus One, breaks a new record. With a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 98%, it surpasses the previous record held by 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah at 94%. However, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah maintains its edge with a perfect 100% Tomatometer score, compared to Minus One’s 97%.
It’s worth noting that the 100% Tomatometer score for Godzilla vs. Destoroyah is based on only six reviews, while Minus One has 111 reviews posted on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this article.
The Godzilla franchise will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2024 alongside the expansion of Legendary’s MonsterVerse with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In addition to the record-breaking Godzilla Minus One, the Apple+ TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters keeps fans engaged with new episodes every Friday.
Apart from high Rotten Tomato scores, Godzilla Minus One has also received an “A” CinemaScore from audiences, matching the score awarded to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. However, if Minus One wants to rival or surpass the box office success of other entries in the series, it must outperform Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla, which grossed an impressive $525 million worldwide as the first installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse.
