In the latest Ghostbusters installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, director Gil Kenan is bringing a fresh take by delving into new mythology. According to Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife alongside Jason Reitman, viewers will now enter “the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga.”
Kenan explained that the Spengler family’s story drove the narrative in Afterlife, making the return of Gozer a natural way to conclude the past. This new chapter allows the team to create a completely new mythology, offering new visual references and terrifying stakes for the storytelling. The Spengler family will return to the New York City firehouse in the sequel, which is to be directed by Kenan and co-written with Reitman. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will introduce this new mythology through an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force, the Death Chill, which brings forth a second Ice Age and forces Ghostbusters both old and new to protect their home and save the world.
Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, and Ernie Hudson all reprise their roles as the original Ghostbusters in the sequel. They are set to have a larger role in Frozen Empire, and while discussing his experience directing them, Kenan shared, “I remember there was a moment halfway through the first morning of directing one of the big scenes where I looked at the monitor, and just caught myself with the biggest grin ever.”
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire combines old and new cast members, such as Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton from previous movies. Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani and comedian Patton Oswalt will also join the cast. The sequel is set to release in the United States on March 29, 2024, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
