Fans of the popular Broadway musical, Wicked, will soon get to see the adventures of Elphaba and Glinda come to life on the big screen. Tony Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo wrapped up filming for her role as Elphaba the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz prequel. She posted a behind-the-scenes photo of Elphaba in flight, expressing her gratitude for the experience.
In an Instagram post, Cynthia Erivo shared her thoughts on the filming process, saying, “I’ve been trying to think of what I’d say when this day finally came, and I’m failing miserably, because honestly there aren’t enough words to fully express what this experience has meant to me… THIS moment, this film, these people, this cast, this crew, this director, my Glinda, were the Grandest gift I could ever have asked for, and I am eternally grateful for the chance to bring you This Elphie. I hope when you meet her, you’ll love her as much and as fiercely as I do. And with that I say, that’s a wrap for me, Elphie out!! “
Erivo takes on the role of Elphaba, previously portrayed by Idina Menzel in the original Broadway production. Ariana Grande joins her in the film as Glinda the Good Witch, who becomes best friends with Elphaba. Written by Winnie Holzman, Stephen Schwartz, and Gregory Maguire, and directed by Jon M. Chu, the film is set to be released in two parts. The first installment of Wicked will hit theaters on November 27, followed by Wicked: Part Two on November 26, 2025.
