- Jason Momoa is hailed as “the definitive Aquaman” by DC Co-Chairman, Peter Safran.
- Despite poor critical reviews, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Safran hopes fans will continue to support Momoa as Aquaman, even if there may be uncertainty about the character’s future in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Jason Momoa has made a significant impact as Aquaman since his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), transforming the character from its comic book origins. His portrayal of the King of Atlantis in the DCEU has influenced the perceptions of fans and critics alike, leading Peter Safran to affirm Momoa’s status as “the definitive Aquaman” during a recent event (The Hollywood Reporter).
Over the years, Momoa has appeared as Aquaman in six live-action DCEU films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Aquaman, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He has also voiced the character in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and made a cameo in the Peacemaker series.
Although Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has received mixed reviews, with a 36% Tomatometer rating, the film maintains a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Safran hopes fans will continue to support Momoa in his journey as Aquaman: “[I hope fans] will really be here to support him in this journey. If it’s the end of the journey, fine. If it goes on, that’s also fine, but I think it has meant so much to him.”
Safran adds that Momoa “will always have a home at DC, and at Warner Bros. In fact, his next movie is Minecraft.” Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is currently playing in theaters, with an estimated $40 million opening over the holiday weekend.
